Federation of Disability Organisations in Malawi (Fedoma) has appealed to the general public to ensure fully protection of persons with disabilities who have been affected by floods in the country.
Symon Munde, Fedoma Executive Director, said most women and children suffer much in this scenario hence there is a need for authorities both within communities that have experienced floods to protect them.
“It’s our plea that authorities should help persons with disabilities by giving them the necessary support to all of them that have been affected by floods in the country,” said Munde.
Munde added: “We understand community authorities like in Chikwawa and Nsanje were given all the required capacity in relations to issues of disability inclusive disaster management therefore we hope their capabilities will assist persons with disabilities there.”
He said the organization will continue monitoring to ensure that people with disabilities are not sidelined in events such as distribution of relief items to flood victims in those areas that are been hit by flooding water.
Munde also appealed to authorities to ensure providing psycho-social support so that they are well rehabilitated after occurrences of disasters like floods which will ensure also that their rights to education is not compromised.
