Lule was tortured to give confession statement – witness

Eighth witness in a murder case of Buleya Lule, involving 13 accused police officers has told High Court Judge Chifundo Kachale that he believes Lule was tortured whilst in police custody in order to give a confession statement.

The witness, retired police officer Dacosta Jailosi who testified in court on Monday, led police investigation into the death of Lule.

According to Jailosi, the deceased was tortured at Chitsime Police Unit in Lilongwe where he spent a night in order to admit reports surrounding abduction and killing of a 14-year-old boy with albinism from Dedza District.

Jailosi added that he believes that Namulondola Team of Detectives arrested a wrong suspect who was Lule during that time on February 18, 2019.

Meanwhile, defense lawyers say they are yet to wind up cross examining Jailosi.

“We are yet to finish, we haven’t exhausted questions when we meet we will resume cross examination.

“I think the first two defense counsels have managed to portray to the court that there gaps in the prosecution case and when we will come some of us will continue from where our colleagues have stopped to also patch in some holes in the prosecution case in favour of the defense,” said Enock Chibwana, one of defence lawyers.

Meanwhile, hearing of the trial has been adjourned to 7 and 8 March 2022.

Until his death, Lule was suspected to have been a prime suspect in the abduction and murder of the boy.
