Three public universities that were under University of Malawi (UNIMA), are in need of K5 billion injection for smooth implementation of their activities.
The three institutions, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES) and University of Malawi (UNIMA) were delinked last year.
However, despite writing government requesting for the said amount, treasury is yet to release the funds.
Speaking to YFM online after meeting Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC), KUHES Acting vice chancellor, Professor Macpherson Mallewa, said the University is currently working on resource mobilisation to address the financial gap.
“In our resource mobilisation strategy we are aiming at financing the institution from our own generated income by about 50 percent and we are hoping that within the next ten years we should achieve more than that,” said Professor Mallewa.
On his part, UNIMA acting vice chancellor, Professor Alfred Mtenje, said the delinked universities need to be supported financially.
He said: “The delinked universities have started operating very well, however there is a great need to provide them with more support for their smooth operations.”
Meanwhile, PAC chairperson, Shadric Namalomba, has concurred with the Universities that they need to be well funded if they are to stand alone and operate smoothly.
He said PAC will push government to consider releasing the needed K5 billion to the Universities.
Among other reasons, the universities were delinked for smooth and effective operation.
