Poor sanitation in most parts of Blantyre city has been described as a worrisome development which is putting lives of people at risk and there is need for an urgent action.
The remarks were made by Limbe Central Ward councillor Gerard Lipikwe, when he visited Limbe Health Centre.
Apart from inspecting the facility, the councillor’s visit was also aimed at taking part in promoting sanitation at the surrounding area.
Among other activities, he inspected the newly renovated maternity wing and donated different items such as wheel chair, trash beans and sweeping brooms.
Councillor Lipikwe said: “It is sad that there is lack of sanitation in Blantyre city including my area of Limbe Central, where littering has become worse and this is why as a leader I decided to be exemplary by leading in activities aimed at encouraging people and promoting sanitation.”
The garbage bins were sourced from Lions Club through Toyota Malawi while the wheelchair is from a Malawian citizen based in UK.
The wheelchair has been handed over to Kanjedza police clinic.
Councillor Lipikwe also revealed that plans are in pipeline to buy a vehicle which will assist in removing trash from his area because vehicles from Blantyre City Council are not enough.
The councillor also inspected maternity wing at the facility which has just been renovated by Kamuzu University of Health Sciences with funding from Seed Global Health.
And in her remarks, deputy in-charge at Limbe Health Centre, Dora Mwafuliwa, said sanitation at the health facility will improve following the donation.
Meanwhile councillor Lipikwe is also expected to install more garbage bins in the markets in the area.
