The Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) has planned to install new intake trash screens for Nkula B Power Plant.
This follows the inspection exercise of the intake trash screens which was done from 31st January 2022 to 1st February 2022 and found that the screens are dislodged and therefore cannot provide effective protection to the machines.
According to a statement dated 4 February, the company says it will shut down Nkula Power Station on Saturday 5 February from 22:00 to Sunday 6 February 2022 at 06:00.
Reads part of the statement: “Due to the intake trash screen repairs, 136 megawatts from Nkula A and B will not be available for power generation on the stated period.”
According to EGENCO, the replacement of the intake trash screens is important for the continued operation of the machines in the most safe and efficient manner.
The statement further indicated that generation of electricity at Tedzani Power Stations shall continue and diesel generators shall also be in use to supplement the available hydropower station and to minimize the impact of the outage and inconvenience to the public.
currently, the country is experiencing massive blackouts which the electricity generating body has attributed to the results of heavy rains.
