The Public Accounts Committee of Parliament (PAC) has queried Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to furnish the Committee with details in regards to a K25 million transaction to National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
PAC’s query follows Accountant General’s (AG) audit report for the year ended 30th June 2019 which revealed that the funds were transacted without supporting documents.
Whilst describing the transaction as both suspicious and worrying, chairperson of the Committee Shadric Namalomba has asked the tax collector to investigate and report back to PAC.
“As a Committee we are very worried and we have indicated to the Commissioner General to go back to investigate further and report back to us by February so that we see whether we can report to other authorities such as fiscal police or AG to investigate why this K25 million was paid to NIB without any supporting documents,” said Namalomba.
Responding to the query, MRA Commissioner General John Biziwick said the transaction was meant for the Bureau to assist the Authority in ant-smuggling services.
He said: “There was an arrangement that if need be, we can ask the NIB to assist us in managing anti-smuggling activities so the money was paid to NIB to assist us on such activities.”
