Opposition tears apart Chakwera’s Sona

Leader of opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa has faulted the Tonse-led administration for failing to deliver on their campaign promises.

Nankhumwa said this in parliament in responding to President Lazarus Chakwera’s State of the Nation Address (Sona) delivered last week Thursday.

“I do not know where exactly those jobs are and who may have given the President these statistics.

“From my observation, I am glad that Malawians are able to discern that the President is lying on these employment statistics,” said Nankhumwa.

According to the opposition leader, Tonse Alliance has failed to deliver among others; introduction of monthly stipends to the elderly, trimming of some presidential powers, fighting corruption, ending nepotism and introduction of passports.

Nankhumwa also said that fixing the country will require divisive leadership and more action that mere political rhetoric.

He said: “We have a leader who takes ages to make simple decisions; a President whose only first love is travelling across the country, and the world, making beautiful speeches without any backing action.”

“Malawians are tired of listening to colourful speeches and being told what the government plans to do.”

Meanwhile, Leader of United Democratic Front (UDF) in the House Nedson Poya has cautioned the Tonse-led administration that it risks booted out of government if the country’s economy continues on the current pace.

“If they are not going to pull up their soxes, this term will be the only term that they will serve Malawians, to be honest,” said Poya.

“They have to do something for them to cling to power without that Malawians are bitter out there, Malawians are not happy, Malawians are struggling in every angle.”

However, Leader of the House Richard Chimwemwe Banda has told Yoneco FM that the responsible Minister of Labour will present a statement in the House clarifying Chakwera’s stand on job creation.

Said Chimwendo Banda: “The Minister of Labour would be bringing in a ministerial statement to help Members of Parliament (MPs) understand, she has been out there to explain the difference.”
