Learning activities at Chilumba primary school in Traditional Authority Ngabu, Chikwawa are being disrupted because flood survivors are using classrooms as their shelter due to lack of tents.
Speaking to YONECO FM online, one of the teachers at the school Flora Philemon appealed to humanitarian players to assist the survivors with tents so that teaching and learning activities can progress.
“We are sharing classes and this is affecting learning activities big time, for instance when we receive rains just as we’ve done today we let the flood survivors occupy the classes and this forces us to knock off and send the children home,” Philemon said.
Commenting on the issue, Group Village Headman Pakamwa from Traditional Authority Makhwira who is also staying at the camp said tents would help address the problem.
“There are six classrooms here and 571 people are all sleeping there,it is too congested and a health hazard,” the Chief said.
“We wake up 5 am because we have to pave way for learners to clean up and then wait for classwork to finish so we can return to the classes and this we feel is an infringement on the children’s right to education.”
Apart from tents, food and sanitation facilities are also on high demand.
