President Lazarus Chakwera says he cannot say now on whether he will resign or not if the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) fails to deliver.
When asked after appearing before the National Assembly Tuesday morning to answer questions from lawmakers, the Malawi leader said he is working around the clock to fix the system for effective execution of the Unit.
Meanwhile, Chakwera has singled out the new Integrated Finance Management System (IFMIS) as a constraining factor that has resulted the country’s secondary school not accessing funds made available to them by Treasury.
He added that the secondary schools will soon access their funds citing that such challenges have been addressed.
Commenting on how the President tackled the questions, Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa has faulted Chakwera for lacking a clear road map in leading the country.
“It is very unfortunate that instead of just going straight to the question as asked, the President would want to talk about the past,” Nankhumwa said.
“What we are talking right now is current, what is happening currently is what Members of Parliament (MP) and Malawians across would want to know, people are still looking for the answers.”
But government spokesperson Gospel Kazako has backed Chakwera’s style of response to the questions saying that he was clear to the point.
He said: “All the procedures were followed, the President was answering questions very frantically and he was shooting from all cylinders.”
“So I think our friends who are on their journey to Singapore probably they are kind of confused, now they think that it didn’t go on very well, no that’s not true.”
During campaign period en route to the court-sanctioned fresh presidential election in 2020, Chakwera is on record having said that he will resign if he will not deliver his first two years of leadership.
