Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker for Chiradzulu South Joseph Mwanamvekha has resigned as the Opposition’s shadow minister of Finance and Economic Affairs.
“I write to inform you that I do not recognize the shadow cabinet that you appointed.
This is due to the fact that the leadership of the Party (DPP), of which I am part of, was not consulted when the shadow cabinet was being constituted contrary to established Party etiquette and discipline,” reads the communication in part.
According to a resignation letter addressed to Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa, Mwanamvekha said his resignation is because the Party was not consulted on composition of the shadow cabinet.
“After I saw that communication, I checked with the authorities who is our President and some executive members of the Party, they told me that were not consulted.
“So, I thought that-that is not proper, so I cannot be represented here without endorsement of the Party,” said Mwanamvekha.
In an interview, Mwanamvekha said he has consulted both his party and constituents who have both advised him not to be part of the shadow cabinet.
“In addition to that I have also consulted people in my constituency and they have told me that I shouldn’t be part of that, that’s why you saw that communication.”
Nankhumwa appointed a 33-member shadow cabinet few days after dissolving a previous one.
