Government says it has recovered over K1 billion as corruption proceeds meant for the graft recovery fund.
Minister of Justice Titus Mvalo said apart from prosecuting corruption-related cases, authorities are also working on recovering funds believed to have accessed through corrupt means.
“We have decided that apart from arresting and having people convicted in court, we must be recovering what has been lost.
“So, there is a fund that we have set up in which we will be putting monies recovered,” said Mvalo.
Mvalo added that his Ministry will work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies like the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) and Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
According to the Justice Minister, the recovered funds will be used for social services in various sectors.
He said: “Once we have such funds, we will be able to use those funds for a number of beneficial purposes.
“For example, we can help get more drugs in hospitals or in whatever social services requirements that are needed.”
The Minister told the august House that recovery will be launched by April this year.
