The Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has written the Public Appointments Committee of Parliament (PAC) to summon the Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service Dr. George Kainja on a vote of no confidence in how he is running the police service.
CDEDI Executive Director, Sylvester Namiwa, alleges that the IG has failed to deliver on promises he made when he was appointed to office such as mending the relationship between the police and citizenry and improving internal security.
The letter reads in part: “Dr. Kainja made a pledge to Malawians that his immediate task would be to ensure that the police should gain its lost glory by among many others mending the sour relationship that existed between the law enforcers and the citizens, and improve the internal security.”
According to the letter that YFM has accessed CDEDI has engaged the IG on several matters such as transferring of senior police officers without following the law and procedures, nepotism, selective application of justice and police brutality to mention a few.
Namiwa says that the recent cases of police stations being broken into and looted is one example of a clear indication that the IG has failed at his job and must be removed from his position.
This has forced CDEDI to pen PAC to summon Dr. Kainja to exonerate himself on why he should not be fired from the post.
