The Joint Civil Society and Concerned Citizens has written President Lazarus Chakwera to fire Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Dr. Steven Kayuni for denying Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) consent to prosecute corruption suspect Ashok Nair.
According to the grouping, denying ACB consent to prosecute the case demonstrates how compromised the DPP is.
They are also calling for prosecution of a person who recorded and leaked a phone conversation with ACB Director General Martha Chizuma.
Addressing the press in Lilongwe, Executive Director for the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) Sylvester Namiwa and Social Revolution Movement leader Phunziro Mvula said they are surprised that the Malawi Police Service (MPS), National Intelligence Services (NIS) and other law enforcement agencies are silent on the issue.
The grouping has since called on the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) to summon Chizuma to disclose the person she had conversed with in the viral audio.
The grouping has provided a 7-day ultimatum for action to be taken on the demands, failing which, they will mobilize Malawians to hold protests.
