A grouping of citizens styled Citizens Against Impunity and Corruption (CAIC) has vowed to proceed with demonstrations slated for Wednesday to the residence of a corruption suspect Ashok Nair at Area 9 in Lilongwe.
The protests to Nair’s residence continues despite Lilongwe District Council’s guidance that CAIC should deliver their petition to the Council’s Office.
Addressing a news conference in Lilongwe, the grouping has maintained that it will proceed with its earlier decision destined for Nair’s residence citing that they do not any petition to deliver to the Council but meeting the suspect face-to-face to face to force him reversing his decision of suing Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General Martha Chizuma.
“Our intention is to meet Mr Ashok Nair and so that he knows us and we are taking there only one message that he withdraws the suit against Martha Chizuma,” said one of the group members Sylvester Ayuba James.
“And understand in the position where he has to stand as a suspect, don’t intimidate or blackmail anyone and allow himself to be investigated, prosecuted.”
Ayuba added that the Council requested the grouping to use the Mchesi-Kamuzu Central Hospital route but they since turned down the request saying that the Council has ill intentions.
According to Ayuba James, the demonstrations will proceed and that they will use the Kamuzu Procession Road route starting from Lilongwe Community Ground.
Nair, through his lawyer, sued Chizuma for defamation following a leaked audio conversation with unidentified person where she alleged that the suspect is corrupt.
But in a dramatic twist of events, Lilongwe District Council has written CAIC informing the grouping that it has cancelled its permission it earlier granted citing that the matter is still before High Court.
