Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola has vowed to list out names of those who were siphoning fuel from Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (Escom) and Electricity Generation Company (Egenco) during the previous Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) regime.
Matola, who said this on Thursday in Parliament, told the House the list contains names of those who were siphoning 400 litres of fuel per week from the two Statutory Corporations.
“First and foremost, it’s not an allegation, it is a naked truth, and if you were and if you were in Malawi by 2018-2019, these activities were happening.
Escom and Egenco was a heaven for a political party, especially DPP and Mulhako wa Alhomwe,” alleged Matola.
But reacting to the development, Thyolo Central legislator Ben Phiri said Matola’s intention is questionable because during the time he was also Minister of Energy, Escom office in Blantyre got suspiciously gutted down by fire.
Meanwhile, Matola has given himself one day saying he will read out the names in the Chamber next week Monday.
“When it comes to syphoning of fuel it is true, and you saw I have promised the house that I will bring the list on Monday,” Matola said.
“I could bring it tomorrow [Friday], but I would want these people to attend the Parliament tomorrow.”
