Government has dismissed widespread rumours making round on various social media platforms purporting that the current Patsetse and MoFaya internet data bundles would revert to old ones upon elapse of 90 days.
According to Minister responsible for Information and Digitalisation Gospel Kazako, the three-month time frame issued by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) to the telecommunication companies is for monitoring purposes in accordance with a certification given by the regulator.
He said: “No, that is not correct and that is not true. What happens is that every product or every service that has been introduced by the telecoms is taken to Macra for certification and authorisation.”
“And normally is given a time frame in this case is 3 months are that three months is to ensure that everything is going on very well.”
Kazako added that upon the elapse of the 90-day period, the parties will review the services and make necessary changes for better.
“So, when they say we are trying this, it does not necessarily mean that after 90 days this is going to go no!
“If anything, if there will be changes, then I think it will be changing for the better,” Kazako said.
The information minister added that government is working hard to ensure that the country gets to the demands of the National Broadband Strategy.
For a long time, Malawians have been complaining about rising internet data prices which prompted the information minister to engage internet providers.
Both TNM Plc and Airtel Malawi Plc introduced the much regarded cheaper internet bundles which have been received with positive feedback from users across the country.
