A Form one student at Wenya Secondary School in Chitipa, Bernard Mzumara died Saturday in a motor vehicle accident at Lutawa along Nthalire-Chitipa Road.
Confirming the development in an interview, Public Relations Officer (PRO) for Chitipa Police Station, Sub inspector, Gladwell Simwaka said the accident was due to speeding.
“Due to speeding, the vehicle which was heading Chitipa Boma from Nthalire hit a pothole and Mzumara flung and fall head down. He was later pronounced dead upon arrival at Chitipa District Hospital,” he said.
The PRO said Mzumara alongside other 20 students from Wenya Secondary School boarded the vehicle registration number MH797 Mitsubishi Canter 2 tonner which was driven by Andrew Mtambo.
“The rest of the 19 students escaped the accident without injuries,” he said.
Simwaka said postmortem report revealed that Mzumara died due to severe head injury and ruptured internal organs.
The deceased hailed from Therere Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Wavikhazya in Chitipa District.
Chitipa District has registered four road accidents in the first quarter of this year, which is a decrease as compared to last year when it recorded seven road accidents in the same period.
