Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (Apam) has appealed to government to address issues that are fueling insecurity of persons with albinism in the country.
The plea comes as on Tuesday 15 March 2022 some unknown gangs exhumed the body of a late 39-year-old Divason Chimombo, a person with albinism who was buried on March 5, 2022 at Nsomba Village in Traditional Authority Somba in Blantyre district.
The exhumation of Chimombo’s body happened despite that the grave was covered with concreate.
Speaking to YFM online, Apam president Young Muhamba described the development as very worrisome.
“This just implies that the criminal gangs of albino bodies are going at whatever length to harvest body parts of persons with albinism hence there is a need for government to intervene the situation,” he said.
According to Muhamba an increase to these cases shows a violation of their rights at large.
“These deplorable incidents points to the pure grave human rights violations against persons with albinism, and should not be tolerated in this era,” Muhamba said.
He also disclosed that another young man with albinism in Mdeka, Blantyre narrowly survived an attack between the night of 13 and 14 march this year when criminal gangs broke into his house to abduct him.
Muhamba therefore appealed to government to among other issues speed up all the policies set aside to their protection such as the construction of houses of people with albinism as one way of ensuring their security in the country.
