Parliament on Tuesday had an early adjournment due to smoke that was seen inside the Chamber.
Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda stood on a point order after smoke engulfed the Chamber which prompted the Speaker to suspend the proceedings.
In an interview, Chimwendo Banda said authorities are investigating the matter to establish the cause of the smoke.
“We don’t know, don’t know whether it’s a fire issue we are waiting for a report, we just heard about smell and we trying to get the report from Parliament,” Chimwendo Banda said.
“I cannot make any conclusion whether it is fire or not was because I have not seen the fire, I heard the smell, and that’s why I rose up to late the Speaker know about the smell.”
The leader has however agreed that the House needs renovation just like any other government building in concurring with what lawmaker for Lilongwe City Centre Alfred Jiya earlier said on Tuesday morning.
He said: “I agree with him, I totally agree with him that any building in this country, any government building needs renovation.”
“And there’s a need for Parliament to reviewed and renovated in areas where it needs to be renovated.”
