The Ministry of Labour has encouraged employers in the country to put in place strategies that focus on ending child labour in their workplaces.
Chief Labour Officer responsible for Employment and Child Labour Francis Kwenda made the sentiment after a two-day child labour Training Manual Review meeting in Lilongwe organized by the Employers’ Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM).
Kwenda said employers are a key stakeholder in ending child labor and that they should targeted with measures and messages to end child labor if the 2025 SDG is to be achieved.
He further said he hopes that the manual under review will play a crucial role in ending the vice as it will be distributed and used.
“The manual is going to assist in enlightening all the stakeholders on the evils of child labor and the plight of children involved in child labour,” Kwenda said.
“I am pleased that this manual will be shared among various employers and they will use it to help end child labour.”
ECAM marketing officer Wales Mtungila said the meeting was crucial for their intention to end child labor in Tea and Coffee sectors.
“We are hoping that the manual will help us to fight for child labor not only in the tea or coffee sector but also other sectors were children are being used for child labour,” Mtungila said.
