Minister of National Unity Timothy Mtambo has bemoaned politics of hatred as portrayed by opposition Members of Parliament (MPs).
Mtambo, who was speaking in Parliament on the sidelines of tabling Peace and Unity Bill, lamented that opposition lawmakers brought debate on the Bill by reflecting on his past.
He said: “We should stop politicising important issues, what was seen here it was literally politics, in this House we have to show maturity, because in the end we represent people out there.”
“I would like to beg people in this country as a Minister for National Unity that politics of hatred, bitterness and confusion should stop because we have to represent out people very well.”
While commending the House for passing the Bill, Mtambo said the Bill is a milestone towards validating peaceful structures in dealing with disagreements at all levels.
“We are happy that the Bill has been passed, this Bill is for the people of this country, this Bill is there to promote unity and peace,” Mtambo said.
“I don’t think anyone would reject an intention of promoting peace and unity because peace and unity are prerequisite to development.”
Mtambo has since turned down proposals to apologise on what opposition MPs described his role in leading country wide anti-government protests as a threat to peace.
Among other areas, the Bill, once enacted into law, will see the establishment of a peace Commission.
