Government has disclosed that it will start sourcing uniforms for police officers locally.
Disclosing this in Parliament, Minister of Homeland Security Jean Sendeza said the decision has been considered with an aim of promoting local products.
Sendeza has however emphasised that production of the police uniforms will be done under strict monitoring.
She said: “As of now we have ordered the cloth because the cloth is a protected cloth, you can’t just be find it everywhere.”
“And the tailors that will be hired will be doing it in a restricted manner so that they uniforms will not be anywhere.”
The Homeland Security Minister also disclosed that government will be giving allowances for officers unlike providing food rations as it has been in the past.
“The funds that are in the budget this time around will not be for the use of buying rations from any other place externally, but it will be Malawians themselves,” Sendeza said.
“But these will be given as allowances to the police officers and they will be at liberty to buy whatever they want, so this will promote our youth and women supplying food to the police officers.”
Recently, police came under the spotlight following the emergence food rations scandal which was marred with misprocurement and irregularities.
