An international relations expert has faulted Malawi Government for voting in favour of suspension of the rights of membership of the Russian Federation from the Human Rights Council.
Malawi is among 93 member states which voted in favour of the suspension during the United Nations General Assembly’s Eleventh Emergency Special Session held on Thursday.
But commenting on the development, the expert Dr John Chikago said Malawi has taken a questionable decision by voting in favour of the suspension.
Dr Chikago said: “In diplomacy there is national interest, what leads you to do anything is of national interest so let’s just wait and see.”
Dr Chikago added that much behind such foreign policies there are strings attached and Malawi would have considered her decision wisely by abstaining the vote.
“I don’t know why we took that decision because those issues are not very close to us and we cannot be taking such a decision,” he said.
The resolution received a two-thirds majority of those voting, minus abstentions, in the 193-member Assembly, with 93 nations voting in favour and 24 against.
