Findings of a survey by the Afrobarometer released today, has shown that 66% of Malawians perceive that corruption in the country has worsened in the last one year.
The report indicates that the Malawi Police service is topping the list of the most corrupt institutions with 42% while Non-governmental Organisations are on position eleven with 25%.
The report also says that sympathizers of both the ruling and opposition political parties are also believing that levels of corruption have exacerbated.
It says 58 percent of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) supporters, 74 percent of UTM and 72 percent of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters believe corruption has worsened in Malawi the past 12 months.
It added that 54 percent of Malawians believe the fight against corruption is worse under the Tonse Alliance government than it was during the DPP administration.
The survey has also shown that 74 percent of Malawians believe in existence of witchcraft while only 14% say it doesn’t exist.
According to the report, most Malawians strongly believe that witchcraft exists and support changing the law to criminalize its practice.
It further shows that educated citizens are more likely to believe in the existence of witchcraft than those with no formal education.
The survey shows that the elderly, especially elderly women, are at greatest risk of being victims of witchcraft accusations.
A majority of Malawians favour changing the law to criminalize witchcraft, providing support for the findings and recommendations of the Special Law Commission on the Review of the Witchcraft Act in Malawi.
