The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS), says Football Association of Malawi (FAM) failed to follow proper procedures before firing Meke Mwase as the Flames’ head coach.
A statement released by MNCS says its Sports Development Committee had a meeting with FAM on April 13, 2022 after learning from the media that Mwase has been fired and Mario Marinica has been hired as the new senior national football team coach by FAM.
The meeting was chaired by the chairperson of the Sport Development Committee Lieutenant Clement Kafuwa (retired).
MNCS summoned FAM, to clarify on how the decision to fire Mwase was arrived at and how the assessment was made and why the football body arrived at the decision without consulting Sports Council and the Government.
The Council also wanted FAM’s clarification on who will be paying the new coach and how Marinica is cheaper than Mwase as reported in the media.
Reads part of the statement: “MNCS is of the view that the procedures that that were meant to be followed of consulting government before making their decision were not followed.”
The statement further said following this a decision has been made that FAM should still meet the government through the Council to consider the employment contract of Mwase.
“Council strongly believes that there was a need for FAM to consult Council and Government before making any decision that would affect Mr. Mwase because he is a government employee, and was employed on recommendation of FAM as coach of the senior national football team, the Flames,” reads the statement.
During the meeting, the FAM delegation was led by its president Water Nyamilandu while the Director of Sports Jameson Ndalama represented the Secretary for Youth and Sports.
