Wildlife and Environmental Society of Malawi (Wesm) and the Centre for Environmental Policy and Advocacy (Cepa) have lamented pollution, poor waste management and inadequate investment as some of the factors affecting sustenance of the environment.
The comments have come as Malawi joins the global community to commemorate World Earth day which falls on April 22 annually.
Speaking to YFM, Wesm branch manager for Lilongwe Chifundo Dalireni said, budgetary allocation for environmental issues is minimal yet the environment faces a lot of threats.
Dalireni also highlighted the need to thoroughly assess big projects before implementing them since they have long term effects to the environment.
Meanwhile CEPA’s executive director Herbert Mwalukomo said the day serves as a reminder to all people to take care of the environment in which they live in and the resources that help sustain life.
He cited the wanton cutting down of trees, and irresponsible waste management as some of the behaviours that need to change if we are to protect the environment.
