Ministry of health says it is still administering the Polio vaccine to children under the age of five though the campaign was set to end on 28 April.
Speaking to Yoneco FM online, on the status quo of the exercise, spokesperson for the ministry Adrian Chikumbe, indicated that some districts such as Kasungu, Lilongwe had run out of the polio vaccine because there were new entrants.
Chikumbe said: “A lot of children are getting the vaccine, even those that did not partake the vaccine in the first rounds that is why some districts run out of the vaccine.
“In some few areas parents were denying their children an opportunity to get the vaccine because of their beliefs, there were also some parents who did not understand that their children need to get another dose of the vaccine.”
He said, overall the exercise is progressing well and the ministry will soon give out the actual statistics of the second round.
“The general picture is that the exercise has been a success we will soon share statistics with the public,” he said.
The first round of the Polio vaccine campaign saw over 2,985,000 children immunized.
Two more rounds are left to complete the exercise.
