As more lawyers are expected to be disbarred, on grounds of improper conduct, including the embezzlement of their clients’ money, the Malawi Law Society (MLS) says this should serve as an encouragement to the general public to report any suspected foul play by the lawyers.
The sentiment comes following revelation by the Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda that 12 more lawyers might be disbarred as they are expected to appeal before court soon.
This also follows Wednesday’s ruling by Chief Justice Rezine Mzikamanda, which stopped Maxwell Tembo from practicing as a lawyer over the embezzlement of money from his clients valued more than 6 million kwacha.
MLS President Patrick Mpaka, said the development means MLS disciplinary committee is very effective and trust worth therefore clients must report their concerns.
He said: “Disciplinary procedure of Malawi Law Society is very effective and if used run its can full course and bring results which should enable the public to trust that when they are dealing with lawyers they are dependable and good reputation with integrity.”
He further said MLS has offices in all the regions across the country where the general public can lodge their complaints.
On Monday, May 6, the Chief Justice will hear disbarment proceedings for three other lawyers namely Richard Katsiche Nicely Msowoya and Julius Nyambo.
Meanwhile that Attorney General has pledged that his office will discipline errant lawyers.
