President Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to promote and create a free working environment for journalists.
Speaking when he hosted members of the media fraternity to a Presidential Breakfast at Kamuzu Palace, in honour of World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2022, President Chakwera expressed concern over harassments, cyber bullying and arrests of journalist for publishing what is deemed against some sections of society.
Chakwera called on Malawians to always seek interventions of media regulatory bodies whenever they feel aggrieved rather than resorting to infringing on media laws.
President Chakwera also pledged to facilitate the process of repealing some archaic laws that are trampling on press freedom in Malawi.
While commending President Lazarus Chakwera’s openness to the press and operationalizing the Access to Information Law, Chairperson for the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi Chapter, Teresa Temweka Ndanga challenged government to start taking to account State operatives that are trying so hard to silence the media.
