The Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) in conjunction with ministry of labour and Employers Consultative Association of Malawi (ECAM) says they are working together to ensure that minimum wage for domestic workers is increased amid rising cost of living in the country.
MCTU Secretary General, Madalitso Njolomole, made the sentiments following a plea by the employees, on a Labour Day, to the Minister of Labour Vera Kamtukule asking her to adequately fight for domestic workers’ rights including improve their wages.
In an interview with YFM online, Njolomole has appealed to employers of domestic workers to meet up the current standard minimum wage payment requirement.
“It saddens me that there are a lot of domestic workers in the country who are still receiving K15, 000 and some even less than that,” Njolomole said.
However, Njolomole has advised workers to report to authorities in district labour offices if they are receiving less than the required minimum wage payment which is not less than K30, 000.
Furthermore, he urged workers to join the Commercial, Industrial and Allied Workers Union (CIAWU), a forum under MCTU which fights for domestic workers’ rights and negotiates with government on their behalf.
