Police in Blantyre has recorded high number street attacks and robbery cases during the first quarter of the 2022.
Regional Commissioner for South West Division, Richard Luhanga, disclosed this on Thursday during a solidarity march which brought together the police and the communities around the city with the aim of restoring people’s trust in the police service and showing commitment of working together.
Recently, there has been a surge of attacks in the city where children connected to the streets have also been mentioned as perpetrators.
Speaking at the event, Luhanga assured the public that police have put in place strategies to deal with the challenges.
“During the first quarter of the year we had a lot of complaints about the rising cases of crimes, however, currently we are seeing a reduction because we are putting in place strategies to totally contain them.”
He further said police have tightened security in some areas that are prone to such criminal activities including areas around Chitawira, ShopRite, MBC, Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) campus and Kamba.
In his remarks, national chairperson for the community policing in Malawi, Yunus Lambat, said the people should know that the police cannot manage to curb the crime activities on their own hence the need for the communities to get involved.
Others who took part at the event were Traditional Authority Somba, officials from the city council, and the non-governmental organisation who are in partnership with the Blantyre Police Station.
