Amid growing concern that inflation could remain in double digits for the remainder of 2022, University of Malawi based economist Professor Ben Kalua says among the variables that the country can control, it needs to seriously consider food security.
Kalua said that most Malawians rely on maize as their source of food and this is one of the vital components in the inflation basket hence the need to ensure that it is produced perennially.
He said perpetual production of maize would help ensure a constant price for the commodity which would allow for more constant prices.
Kalua added that to fix the issue of food availability maize is a vital component and there is need to maximize it productions and this can be done through modern methods.
“We need to diversify out of rain fed maize production since we are currently in winter it is time for winter cropping so the country should look at farming which adapts to the seasons.”
