Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) has called for government to adjust farm gate prices by 25% to ensure that farmers are making benefits amidst devaluation of the kwacha which has resulted to the increase of fertilizer prices.
FUM president Frighton Njolomole expressed worry that the adjustment in fertilizer prices will negatively impact the country as most farmers rely on fertilizer to have sufficient harvests.
Njolomole said an adjustment in farm gate prices would support many farmers to have adequate money to use in buying fertilizer.
“If they devalue the kwacha with 25% therefore there is also a need to raise the farm-gate price with 25%,” Njolomole said.
He further urged government to support farmers in expanding the practice of using organic manure as an alternative for fertilizer.
