President Lazarus Chakwera has reiterated on the need for institutions of higher learning to mentor highly motivated professionals who can bring desirable change to the nation.
The Malawi Leader made the remarks on Saturday morning during a 28th graduation ceremony of students from the African Bible College (ABC) in Lilongwe.
According to Chakwera, Malawi is currently facing moral crisis due to ethical compromise on the country’s education sector.
He said: “When I say quality leadership, I first of all mean leadership that is uncompromising in matters of ethics, many of the ills of our nation in every sector are the direct result of decades of ethical compromise leading to the multiple moral crisis that we are currently facing as a nation in the education sector.”
He told the young graduates that the nation needs people who must be willing to respond with action on various ills affecting the Malawians.
Chakwera called upon the outgoing students to embark on innovative ventures that can meaningfully contribute to national development.
“Tens of thousands of students are failing to pass the secondary school exams each year because the quality of teaching they receive is poor but the reason the quality of teaching is poor but because for decades the leaders of many schools made ethical compromises.
Allowing a culture of cheating to prevail which in turn makes the training of teachers last of a priority you cannot allow people to cheat on exams for decades and expect to have quality and employable graduates,” said the Malawi Leader.
He said Malawi needs leaders that are willing to initiate change in various fields of endeavour.
