Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 34-year old man on suspicion that he killed a person over three chickens.
Confirming the development to YFM Online, Deputy Spokesperson for Lilongwe Police Station Foster Benjamin said the suspect, Afete John, was arrested on Friday after allegedly killing Malekano Kamakhala.
Benjamin said Kamakhala succumbed to mob justice after being caught stealing the said three chickens.
“The murder took place at about 1am on Friday at Milala Village under Sub-Traditional Authority Msinde in the district.
John awoke to noises from his chicken pen and immediately went out to check. He found Kamakhala with three chickens valued at K12,000, and immediately attempted to grab him,” Benjamin said.
He added that Kamakhala was seriously injured and left for dead before Kasiya Police Post detectives took him to Kabudula Rural Hospital. He died while receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, the murder suspect has been charged with murder and he will appear in court soon.
Benjamin has since called upon the public not to take laws into their own hands when they apprehend crime suspects.
