Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) says a total of 250 licenced operators working in the telecommunication sector, including broadcasting entities and postal services providers are owing the authority outstanding licence fees amounting to K9.4 billion.
Macra Director General, Daudi Suleiman said this at a press briefing in Blantyre on Monday.
Suleman said telecommunication companies are owing the regulator K8.2 billion, radio and television stations have outstanding dues amounting to K823 million while postal service providers have K377 million dues.
He further disclosed that 12 licences for some operators are at risk of being revoked if they fail to comply within the next 30 days.
Recently, Macra ordered Angaliba Television and radio stations to cease broadcasting and also revoked the television content licence for Rainbow Television for breach of conditions of their licences including failure to settle their outstanding licence fees.
