State witness in a $537, 201. 45 (about K547.6 million) alleged fraud case at Malawi Embassy in Ethiopia has told the Chief Resident Magistrate’s court in Lilongwe that he received threats whilst investigating the matter.
The witness – Chief Internal Auditor from Accountant General’s office Spencer Mulekano said officials at the Embassy threatened him together with his team who told them that the matter was sensitive.
Mulekano said the team was determined to proceed with the investigation after receiving assurance from government that they would be protected.
In an interview, Director of Public Prosecutions Steven Kayuni said the State has one more witness to wind up the matter.
“We are just waiting for the police to give us information of his whereabouts, we heard that he is in Zambia but we were asking the Zambian Government to send him [Ke] back to Malawi so that he can face the law,” he said.
Fletcher Chowe and Doreen Chavula-Kapanga are answering seven counts bordering on fraudulent false accounting, money laundering and theft by public servant.
According to the State, it is alleged that the two accused persons between 2014 and 2015 employed in the public service as First Secretary (Administration) and Head of Finance and Deputy Ambassador respectively at the Embassy by virtual of such an employment had under the control were unable to make due account of $537, 201. 45.
High Court Judge Patrick Chirwa has since adjourned hearing of the matter to Tuesday morning for cross examination.
