President Lazarus Chakwera has pledged never to interfere with the operations and decisions made by the Supreme Court in a bid to promote independence of the courts.
He made the pledge on Friday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during the swearing in of the newly appointed four judges of the Supreme Court.
In his words Chakwera said there is still a lot more that needs to be done to consolidate respect for governance institutions globally as such he intends to lead by example in achieving this by enhancing the courts independence.
“So long as I am president, you will never hear me say anything to the public against a decision you make from the bench even when that decision is unfavorable to my administration,” said Chakwera.
He added: “While the Malawian people are free to express their views on your rulings which is important to maintain public trust and accountability of the judiciary as a public institution funded by taxpayers, I believe that my unique responsibility as president is to always protect and promote the independence of your court.”
The Malawi leader has however encouraged the judges to be courageous and brave not to be moved by anything except the constitution, which is the only law that guides them as they serve on the bench.
The four newly sworn in Justices of the Supreme Court of Appeal include Sylvester Kalembera, Dingiswayo Madise, Rowland Mbvundula and Dorothy Nyakaunda Kamanga.
