The governing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has distanced itself from a news conference organised by the party’s National Coordinator Alex Major.
In a statement issued earlier this week, Major said he would like to address the nation on issues to do with corruption, press briefing by both UTM President Saulos Chilima and MCP General Secretary Eisenhower Mkaka including MCP convention slated for next year.
But according to MCP Central Region Chairman Zebuloni Chilondola, the position of National Coordinator does not exist in the party’s hierarchy and that Major does not have powers to speak on behalf of the party.
However, Major insists that he will proceed with the said media briefing at the party’s Regional Headquarters in Lilongwe this coming Friday.
“Yes If we talk of in terms of powers, it’s true that we don’t have those powers but what I can say is that the Regional Chair or the Regional Committee will be communicated at one point in time, I am sure there is always protocols within the party structure.
I am sure, if all is done, the position of the Regional Committee will change, I am sure with due respect, if all procedures are done the Committee will change its position,” Major said.
Earlier, Major communicated that the news conference would be held on Tuesday morning but postponed to Friday to pave way for a Presidential public function which was also scheduled to take place on the same Tuesday which was also postponed to a later date.
