Human rights activist Sylvester Namiwa has vowed to continue fighting for Malawians despite his alleged abduction on Wednesday this week.
Namiwa was reportedly kidnapped in Lilongwe’s Area 3 on Wednesday afternoon, just few minutes after convening a news conference on demonstrations slated for yesterday Thursday.
Speaking after receiving medication at a clinic in Lilongwe, Namiwa said he will not relent to what he called dictatorial leadership style of President Lazarus Chakwera.
He vowed; “I will fight on, I am betting the last grope of my blood to defend this democracy, our fathers, our parents fought Kamuzu and we will no backtrack on President Lazarus Chakwera.”
The activist, who is also executive director of the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has described Chakwera and the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) as a threat to the country’s democracy.
“Chakwera and his MCP are a threat to democracy and but we won’t be intimidated,” Namiwa said.
When asked about his whereabouts, the vocal human rights activist responded that: “I don’t even know, it’s good that I am alive.”
Meanwhile, Namiwa says he will be addressing the nation very soon to narrate the ordeal once he reunites with his family and engages his lawyers.
“I need to sit down first with my family and lawyers then I will come forward to address Malawians on what really transpired,” he said.
