Teachers in the country have been urged to deliver life skills lessons in order to address issues of unintended pregnancies and early marriages.
Samuel Kamanga, Head of Education Sector Youth department in Machinga district said this on Thursday during a stakeholders’ orientation meeting on universal periodic review reporting processes that was organized by Malawi Reproductive Health Rights Alliance under Power to Youth program.
Kamanga observed that most teachers put much focus on pass rate and little effort is made in dealing with other personal issues among learners a situation which creates a challenge.
“As a nation we always measure the success of a school based on how they are achieving the results but have we ever looked at the success of a school where there are zero cases of early marriages and early pregnancies,” Kamanga said.
He said the problem can be addressed if teachers can start imparting knowledge to learners on how they can sustain their lives as well as pass examinations.
