International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says Malawi has to embrace nuclear science and technology in order to contribute cost effectively to social-economic development goals.

Speaking during a Public Lecture at Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Wednesday, Director for Division for Africa Departments of Technical Cooperation, IAEA, Dr Shaukat Abdulrazak said Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognise the role of science, technology and innovation as essential enablers for developments.

Abdulrazak further highlighted on the significance of using technology in agriculture, industry and heath sectors, saying it can improve people`s lives in the country.

Concurring with Abdulrazak, Director of Environmental Affairs Department (EAD) and National Liaison officer in Malawi, Tawonga Mbale said Malawi needs to diversify the use of nuclear technology in order to achieve national development goals.

Mbale also applauded IAEA for implementing projects in various sectors including health, agriculture, industry, water, mining and environment monitoring in the country.

Currently, Malawi is implementing a five year country programme framework (2022-2027) which outlines how nuclear science and technology can contribute cost effectively to the current social-economic development goals.

Malawi has received up to $2.5 million for implementing its programme.
