Concerned with rapid increase in size of the country’s population, Parliament has established a Caucus on Population and Sustainable Development.
Speaking to journalists at Parliament Building in Lilongwe, Chairperson for the Caucus Abel Kayembe said the lawmakers want to focus on advocacy and managing the trend.
He said: “We need to manage the economy very well, there will be pressure on the environment and social sector especially provision of infrastructure in the education and health sectors, all those will hinge everyone.”
Kayembe has also disclosed that the establishment of the Caucus will be officially launched this coming Friday in Lilongwe.
The current population of Malawi is over 20 million based on projections of the latest United Nations (UN) data.
According to current projections, the country’s population is expected to surpass 50 million people by 2058 and reach 66.21 million by the end of the century.
The UN further reports that with a current population of about 19.13 million for 2020, it means that Malawi’s population is expected to more than triple by 2099.
