Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Peter Mutharika has dismissed widespread media speculations that he has endorsed eastern region vice president Bright Msaka as the party’s 2024 torch bearer.
According to Mutharika’s spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, Mutharika has not endorsed anyone to head the party.
Reads a statement signed by Namalomba: “All this is not true, His Excellency, the President would like to advise all DPP followers and the general public that no one has been endorsed and or dumped by the President and the former first lady.”
In an interview, Namalomba said the DPP constitution provides for free and fair election of leaders into various positions.
“His Excellency is a true democrat and believes in the constitution of the mighty DPP which provides for free and fair election of leaders into various positions of the Party at a convention held every five years,” he said.
He added that the Party’s convention will be held in 2023 where leaders will be elected.
“The next convention to elect leaders at all levels of the Party will take place in 2023 and will be preceded by an announcement by the Central Executive Committee of the Party of the date of the convention and commencement of campaign for those duly eligible to stand for office,” Namalomba said.
