Minister of Labour Vera Kamtukule has dispelled rumours making rounds that Shoprite chain of stores would like to close shops in the country.
Kamtukule told YFM online that government has been in contact with the franchise which has assured them that the shop will continue to operate in the country.
This follows the closing of Zomba Shoprite whose decision to cut operations was due to low return on investment.
“Shoprite is here to stay they have made a business decision to close the shop in Zomba because they are facing a lot of completion and they were not able to make money.
But the remaining shops that are in existence in the country are going to remain open,” Kamtukule said.
In light of Zomba Shoprite the Minister explained that Shoprite’s management has been in touch with the Ministry informing on the procedure of its closure.
She said since her ministry understands the financial impact the retrenchment of employees from the store will have on their livelihoods the ministry will ensure that the law is followed to ensure that dues are paid.
“Now that we have been formally informed you can be assured that all the 25 employees are going to receive dues accordingly and as stipulated by the law.”
