Graft busting body, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested former Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha for alleged abuse of office.
According to a press release from ACB, Mwanamvekha, was arrested on Tuesday on allegations that he approved 18.3 million dollars to the Ministry of Homeland Security for the unlawful procurement of uniforms and equipment for Malawi Prison Services.
According to ACB, the case was recorded on 16 October 2020 that the Ministry of Homeland Security suspiciously procured Malawi Prison Service uniforms and equipment from One Guard FZE based in the United Arab Emirates without following proper procedure.
From then the ACB conducted investigations which established that Mwanamvekha abused his office and neglected official duties by among others disbursing funds without verifying the urgency and importance of the procurement.
Mwanamvekha will likely be charged with abuse of office and neglect of duties contrary to section 25B (1) and section 121 of the corrupt practices act and the penal code respectively.
The arrest comes as Mwanamvekha is currently battling the legal system to have a case discharged from court for allegedly having given false information to the International Monetary Fund-IMF.
