Lilongwe District Council has advised a grouping dubbed Action Against Impunity to postpone its planned demonstrations slated for Thursday this week.
In a letter addressed to the grouping’s leaders, Lilongwe District Commissioner (DC) Lawford Palani said the request for postponement is because police will be engaged with some operations from 16 to 20 August 2022.
Palani added that with the said operation, there will not be enough security as majority of officers will be deployed to other duties.
Reads the letter in part: “Kindly take note that pursuant to Section 100 of the Police Act and advice from Officer in-Charge. Lilongwe Police Station, we are asking you to postpone your demonstrations.
This is so because from 16 to 20 August, 2022, the police have some operations and therefore there will not be enough security on this date as the majority of Malawi Police Service will have been deployed for other duties.”
He said: “We have taken note of the letter and a quick one is that the district council has failed to disclose the kind of operations they are talking about and they have also failed to state the number of officers that will be involved to justify their calling on us to postpone.
