The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has raised concern over rising cases of mob justice in the country.
National Police deputy spokesperson Harry Namwaza said from June to August this year the country registered 49 cases of mob justice.
Namwaza said among the cases, seven are a result of witchcraft accusations whose victims are mostly the elderly.
He challenged the citizenry to desist from taking the law into their hands on people who have allegedly committed different crimes arguing that the vice disrupts police investigations.
Namwaza has since called on the citizenry to follow proper legal procedures whenever they want justice saying anyone found doing the malpractice will be held accountable in accordance with the law.
“We have to work on mindset change; others don’t understand that as a country, we have laws for governing our human behaviour. Taking laws into own hands is lawlessness and everyone doing this will be arrested and prosecuted,” Namwaza said.
