Ten people have died in a road accident in Kasungu while three have sustained serious injuries after a bus they were travelling in hit a stationary truck Monday evening.
Kasungu Police Station spokesperson Joseph Kachikho said the deceased include nine males and one female.
Kachikho said the bus belonging to Matours Bus Services which had 66 passengers on board.
“Upon arrival at Mkula Village, the driver was exchanging direction with unknown vehicle and after finishing the exchange direction, he was a breakdown vehicle in front of him,” Kachikho said.
“Due to speeding, the driver of the Matours Bus Services failed to control his vehicle and hit the stationary truck and as a result both vehicles swerved to the extreme nearside where they stopped into a water drainage.”
Following the impact, ten passengers from the bus were confirmed dead upon arrival at Nkhamenya Rural Hospital while three others who sustained serious injuries are admitted to Kasungu District Hospital. The driver and other 20 passengers escaped with minor injuries.
