The Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has endorsed mass anti-Tonse government demonstrations slated for Friday October 28 in the cities of Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu and Zomba.
The demonstrations that have been organized by a grouping called Action Against Impunity, are against what they call rising corruption and government’s failure to address the economic challenges.
According to a statement signed by DPP’s Administrative Secretary, Francis Mphepo, the decision to endorse the protests is in accordance with Malawi’s constitution which gives everyone the right to peaceful demonstrations.
“All leaders of the party at area, constituency, district, regional and national level committees are called to mobilise Malawians to join these demonstrations,” reads the statement.
The party has since warned the Tonse government against directly or indirectly frustrating the protests.
“We call upon the Tonse government to facilitate these planned demonstrations by providing necessary security to persons and property,” reads the statement.
